Michelle Wucker used cockfighting as a means to interpret the historical relationship between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. It worked. Cockfighting is a very popular pastime, or sport as some may see it, in both countries. She is able to connect every aspect of cockfighting, from roosters, owners, gamblers and viewers of the fight to the tumultuous relationship between these countries and how outside but invisible forces are at the same time the biggest entities making the bets.
You'll enjoy this book especially if you have some knowledge on cockfighting.
