Description
Descripcion en espanol
During the bloodiest dictatorships Latin America ever met a group of young Dominicans organized an invasion which took place June 14, 1959 with the objective of trying to overtake Rafael Leonidas Trujillo regime. It was crushed violently and completely. The June 14 fighters lacked the resource and infrastructure needed to succeed. Furthermore, in an invasion backed by Cuba's Fidel Castro the United States feared that if they succeeded they would have another Cuba in the Caribbean.
To honor the martyrs of the June 14 invasion a group of young people, led by lawyer Manolo Tavarez Justo subsequently organized a clandestine movement named itself June 14 Movement (Movimiento 14 de Junio). The history of this dark chapter of the Dominican Republic existence cannot be told without paying sufficient attention to the contributions of this movement to weaken the regime.
The third edition of this voluminous book by historian Tony Raful updates some of his conclusions from previous editions in light of more recent changes in the Dominican society and worldwide.
