Few Dominican books cause a stir months before its publication. The book was a bestseller even before it was printed. People stood in line to buy it. What caused that commotion?

The author, Joaquin Balaguer was president of the Dominican Republic at the time the book was published. Calling Balaguer a controversial figure in Dominican politics is nothing short of an understatement. The longest democratically elected president in the history of the Dominican Republic, Balaguer started his career as one of Trujillo's men.

After a coup that outed Juan Bosch in 1965, and that led to civil war, Balaguer emerged as the candidate of compromise. What follows is a period called by Dominicans as "Balaguer's 12 years", a period in which he remained in power for 3 consecutive periods and that was marked by repression and human rights violations.

Balaguer's book had a blank page. A page in which, according to him, the name of Dominican journalist Orlando Martinez' assassins will be revealed in time. An scandalous crime that was suspected by many to have been something to do with his office. "After his death" all will be revealed promised Balaguer. Half a decade later the book is out of print and we don't know what was supposed to be in the blank page.

THIS BOOK IS OUT OF PRINT. WE ONLY HAVE A FEW COPIES AVAILABLE.
